Course Summary
Swim (3km)
Athletes will complete a 2 lap swim course. Deep water start. Athletes swim in an anticlockwise direction. Starting from the Northern end of Strand beach heading south towards the The Strand Jetty. Turning left and heading back up to the northern end of the beach where they take another left and head towards shore. Athletes will exit the water turning over timing mat and re-enter the water swimming straight out from the beach to the buoys and turning right where they will merge with swimmers starting their race to complete a second lap of the course. Once athletes take their last left turn they will head to shore, exiting the beach at the same point as the beach turn and heading into transition.
Transition
Transition is located on The Strand, in front of Shore Drive Motel.
Bike Course (114km)
Athletes will enjoy taking in all the best sights of Townsville on this three-lap bike course, along smooth roads, with little elevation and just enough technical turns to keep racing interesting!
Cyclists will exit transition, riding on the left-hand side of the road at all times, heading towards the Strand via Isley Street & Mitchell St. The Strand and CBD riding features the most technical parts of the course, with narrowing sections of road, a few U-turns, a climb & descent on Oxley Street and technical turns through Flinders Street and the CBD.
You’ll ride pass Queensland Country Bank Stadium (twice) and then get to experience riding around the motor-racing track, which we are sure many of you haven’t had the opportunity to do before!
Riders will then head north, on the western side of Castle Hill, for 3kms of straight and flat roads, U-turning then making their way back towards the competition venue via Flinders Street and the CBD.
Once past the competition venue, athletes then head north along the stunning Cape Pallarenda Road, taking in the coastal views out towards Magnetic Island towards the turn-around point at Cape Pallarenda Conservation Park to head back towards the competition venue to complete each lap.
At the end of the final lap, riders will come through their own finish line and timing mat in the Aquabike transition area. Once bikes have been racked, athletes can keep running through transition to the main finish line for the full crowd of supporters to congratulate them.
