Changed Traffic Conditions

The 2024 Multisport World Championships will be hosted in Townsville from Wednesday 14th August – Sunday 25th August 2024.

There will be some Road and Carpark Closures during the event.  This information provides the dates that the roads will be affected.  The closures will only be in place during the actual race and then access arrangements will be implemented in all areas pre and post races.

Police, Main Roads and your local government have approved for these changes to take place.  We aim to provide courses and venues that provide the least impact to local community and businesses.  This event would not be possible without the support of the local community – so thank you!

Jezzine Park Area – Howitt St & The Strand Access

Residents and businesses on Howitt Street and The Strand will be impacted by the 2024 World Triathlon Multisport Championships:

HOWITT STREET EAST BOUND – Closed for an extended period from Monday 12 August – Wednesday 28 August. It will be operating as one-lane traffic on non-competition days.

COMPETITON DAY – FULL CLOSURE – The Strand & Howitt Street

• Friday 16 August    6.00am – 6.00pm
• Sunday 18 August  4.30am – 5.00pm
• Friday 23 August   5.00am – 11.30am
• Saturday 24 August  5.30am – 5.30pm
• Sunday 25 August   3.30am – 8.00pm

There will be local access available outside of competition times along The Strand and Howitt St.

• Thursday 15 August – Sunday 18 August
• Thursday 22 August – Sunday 25 August

Local access will be one way from McKinley St. Local Access will be granted for vehicles displaying a Local Access Pass on the front windscreen. No vehicle access during competition times.

Sunday 25 August – Townsville Detour Map Long Distance Triathlon Event

As the use of public roads is required, changed traffic conditions and clearways must be enforced to ensure the safety of participants and volunteers. Please use Hugh St for access around Townsville CBD Closures.

When planning your travel arrangements please ensure you leave plenty of time as traffic delays may occur. All Road Closures also include No parking / Tow Away zone.  Vehicles parked within Road Closures will be towed to
the nearest accessible side street.

Central Village Access via Fletcher Street

Residents and businesses on the southern side of Flinders Street will need to access this area via Fletcher Street on the following date whilst the Long Distance Triathlon and Aquabike events are being run as part of the 2024 World Triathlon Multisport Championships:

• Sunday 25 August

Access to Central Village, Central Queensland University Townsville, Queensland Rail offices and surrounding business and accommodation remains open and accessible all day. To access the vehicle crossing point on Fletcher St traffic must enter from the East. The crossing will be manned
by Traffic Controllers and Police, please obey all directions given. Delays may be expected, allow extra time.
